H-1B rule changes 2026: 9 things US visa workers need to know

The US H-1B system has undergone several changes in 2026, affecting everything from visa costs and the H-1B lottery to job changes, international travel, green-card processing and H-4 dependents.

The US H-1B visa allows American employers to hire foreign professionals for specialised jobs. For workers already in the US, however, the visa is not simply a one-time approval. They may have to renew their status, change employers, travel abroad, bring dependents to the US or eventually pursue a green card.
