Parliamentary panel never discussed UPI fee: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday rejected suggestions that the parliamentary panel on finance had backed the government’s latest move, asserting that no specific proposal to impose Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI transactions was ever placed before the committee.Gogoi, a member of the Standing Committee on Finance, said questions over the need for MDR had come up before the panel, but claimed government representatives had neither presented the proposal announced this week nor given “specific or satisfactory answers” at the time.
