Meta is ‘service provider’, not ‘simple intermediary’, as algorithms amplify content: Govt

The Indian government is disinclined to treat Meta as simply an intermediary, government officials said on Wednesday.

“Meta could no longer be viewed simply as an intermediary because its algorithms amplify content and determine its visibility,” sources said.

Sources said the government believes Meta – the owner of Facebook and Instagram – does not have legal immunity in this situation, although the interpretation of law and the final determination rest with the judiciary.
