Why are highway operators turning to AI as networks expand?
As India accelerates highway construction, the focus is increasingly shifting to how the expanding network is managed once roads and expressways are operational. Rising traffic, frequent violations, breakdowns and accidents are putting greater pressure on highway authorities and operators to monitor roads and respond to incidents quickly.
Digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, computer vision and automated traffic management systems are increasingly being considered for these tasks. Industry executives say such systems can reduce the burden of continuous manual monitoring, but their wider use will also depend on the availability of reliable infrastructure, maintenance and common standards.
