Ship captain, sailor on trial in Finland over damage to subsea cables

Helsinki: A Russian captain and a senior crew member of a ship suspected of damaging two subsea cables linking Finland and Estonia, went on trial in a Finnish court on Tuesday.

The Fitburg, a 132-metre (433-feet) cargo ship en route from Russia to Israel, was stopped by Finnish authorities on December 31, 2025, following suspicions that the ship’s anchor had damaged two telecoms cables in the Gulf of Finland.

The ship was registered in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
