Parliamentary panel seeks tougher curbs on social media platforms

A high-level parliamentary panel has suggested that the IT Ministry, in consultation with the Home and Law ministries, consider amending the Information Technology Act, 2000, to introduce specific provisions holding social media intermediaries legally accountable if they fail to comply with lawful takedown orders within prescribed timelines for objectionable and divisive content.The panel has recommended measures such as graded penalties and the potential suspension of operations, among other punitive steps.
