N Chandrasekaran’s directorship in legal grey zone

Legal opinion is divided over whether N Chandrasekaran can continue as a director on the Tata Sons board after the holding company’s annual general meeting was adjourned without transacting business, adding fresh uncertainty to a leadership transition already under way.

The August 18 AGM was adjourned for want of quorum after Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), barred from holding meetings by the Maharashtra Charity Commissioner, could not nominate its representative. The agenda included the renewal of Chandrasekaran’s directorship.
