Congress, CPM oppose bill opening door to UPI transaction charges on digital payments
The Congress and the CPM have spoken out against the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill that was passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Congress communications head and MP Jairam Ramesh said the passage of the bill “removes the statutory guarantee that keeps UPI transactions free”.
He explained: “It opens the door to Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges, which can easily be expanded to all payments in the future. The cost will inevitably be borne by ordinary people who will now have to pay to use UPI transactions.
