Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has warned that competition with China must not become a reason for American technology companies to bypass critical safety standards and guardrails. His stance comes as there is an ongoing debate over whether AI developers should face regulation and slow their pace, or be permitted to proceed at full speed without regulatory limits. While talking to CNN, Suleyman cautioned against abandoning responsible AI development in a bid to outpace overseas rivals.

“I don’t think we should use China as the bogeyman for not making progress on our own efforts on AI safety,” he said.
