US telcos diverge on AI-RAN GPU deployment strategy: Report
NEW DELHI: Major US telecom operators are diverging in their strategies regarding the integration of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) into their radio access networks (RANs) for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. While Nokia and Nvidia are leading discussions around GPUs in the RAN, Verizon’s CTO Yago Tenorio has voiced reservations about their necessity for core radio workloads, according to a Fierce Network report.
Tenorio acknowledges the utility of GPUs for application-specific purposes, citing Verizon’s work on smart glasses for augmented fan experiences at sporting events, which leverages GPUs at the network edge. However, he distinguishes this from embedding GPUs directly into the radio for RAN processing.
