Tech leaders push for AI guardrails, Washington hesitates as Beijing moves against ‘rogue’ AI agents

Tech leaders’ increasingly urgent warnings about the potential harm of artificial intelligence are running into political resistance in Washington, while China is moving ahead with measures aimed at containing some of the same risks.

President Donald Trump has opposed recent calls from technology leaders for greater government oversight, including Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and xAI’s Elon Musk. Trump dismissed efforts to limit the technology as a “conspiracy” on Monday, while other leading Republicans, including Vice-President JD Vance, have expressed caution.
