NTT Docomo begins deployment of Nokia Open RAN gear in Japan
NEW DELHI: NTT Docomo has initiated commercial operations of Nokia’s latest base station, configured for a multi-vendor Open RAN environment, marking what the Japanese telecom operator claims is a world-first deployment of the vendor’s equipment in such a setup. This strategic move allows the base station to connect with open radio units from various suppliers, enhancing network flexibility and operational efficiency.
The O-RAN Alliance-compliant base station supports both LTE and 5G, equipped with Levante and Ponente baseband cards for data and control processing. It integrates Nokia’s Massive MIMO network optimisation technology to boost connectivity during peak demand. NTT Docomo anticipates the new base station will support a greater number of radio units and consume less power than its existing infrastructure.
