Congress flags ‘US pressure’ on UPI move, questions possible charges above Rs 2,000

The Congress has alleged that Monday’s government notification barring bank charges for UPI payments up to ₹2,000 and RuPay debit card transactions indicates US pressure to give their payment companies an advantage.

Lok Sabha Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi posted on X: “Now, MDR can be levied on merchant UPI transactions above ₹2,000. Even if these transactions account for just 5 per cent of the volume, they make up nearly 65 per cent of UPI’s total transaction value. The government says no fees will be charged to customers. But where will the fees imposed on shopkeepers ultimately come from? Added to prices, straight out of the customer’s pocket.
