MIT panel report warns of ‘cognitive surrender’, outlines how AI weakens student learning

MIT has warned that growing reliance on artificial intelligence is disrupting student learning, weakening social interaction and making traditional forms of assessment less reliable, the alarm coming at a time when there are big questions over what the rapidly emerging new technology means for humanity at large.

MIT’s Ad Hoc Committee on AI Use in Teaching, Learning and Research Training spent five months examining how generative AI was changing education on campus. Its report drew on surveys, research, meetings and discussions with students, teachers and other members of the famed tech school.
