Govt reviews WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal replies on username feature, says IT secretary
The Centre has received responses from messaging platforms over notices issued on their ‘username’ feature and is currently reviewing them before deciding its next course of action, Information Technology Secretary S Krishnan said on Monday.
The government had issued notices to WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal over concerns that the username feature, which allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers, could increase the risk of online fraud, phishing, digital arrest scams and impersonation.
