Demis Hassabis closed Google I/O 2026 on Tuesday with a line that drew audible gasps from the room. The Google DeepMind CEO told developers they were “standing in the foothills of the singularity”—a phrasing the tech industry usually keeps to podcasts and late-night X threads, not main-stage keynotes.

He doubled down the next day. Speaking to Axios at the developer conference, Hassabis said this is the year the shift starts becoming tangible. With the agentic systems shipping right now, he said, “we can start feeling it now.”
