OpenAI has announced that the company is pausing its Stargate artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure project in the United Kingdom (UK). According to a report in Bloomberg, OpenAI has cited the high cost of energy and regulatory environment in the country as the reasons. While maintaining the OPenAI sees huge potential for the UK’s AI future, the company said in a statement “We continue to explore Stargate UK and will move forward when the right conditions such as regulation and the cost of energy enable long-term infrastructure investment,” Politico was first to report that the project was on hold.
One of Sam Altman’s most-ambitious projects, OpenAI planned the Stargate project in partnership with Nvidia and Nscale and was set to provide up to 8,000 GPUs.
