Deepfakes

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has broadened the scope of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 to bring synthetically generated information, including deepfakes, under regulatory oversight.

The amended rules introduce the concept of Synthetically Generated Information (SGI), defined as audio, visual, or audio-visual content that has been created or manipulated through computational means in a way that makes it appear authentic or indistinguishable from real people or actual events. This definition covers deepfakes as well as other forms of AI-produced media.
