Trai holds off on net neutrality rules for 5G network slicing

Mumbai | New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has not offered any immediate clarity on applicability of net neutrality rules in case of 5G network slicing, with the regulator adopting a wait-and-see approach to monitor the situation.

Telecom operators, however, have asked the government to relook at the net neutrality rules and explicitly allow network slicing.

Operators consider network slicing crucial for 5G monetisation. Slicing involves creating multiple virtual networks on top of a single shared physical 5G infrastructure, enabling customised services. Critics argue that slicing violates the principle of net neutrality as it allows for differentiated quality of service.
