Telcos want net neutrality rules updated for 5G era

New Delhi: Telecom operators want the government to relook at the 2016 net neutrality norms and update them for the 5G era to provide explicit support of network slicing, which would allow them to charge premiums for higher speeds or guaranteed quality of service as a means to monetise their 5G networks.

Telecom operators such as Reliance Jio have submitted comments concerning net neutrality to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), asking the regulator to update the norms that will support slicing for tariff products such as a defined upload speed slice and low latency gaming slice. The telco submitted comments as part of its views for the upcoming spectrum auction.
