As ChatGPT gets ads, starting today, Anthropic’s 1000-plus words to explain why what Sam Altman is doing with ChatGPT is wrong

OpenAI has started testing ads in ChatGPT for select users starting today. The Sam Altman-led AI company announced that it will start showing ads to a subset of free and Go users in the US. This comes after weeks of criticism and public jabs from rival Anthropic that published ads and changed Claude’s homepage aimed at mocking OpenAI’s decision to bring ads. The company also published a long blog post explaining why it believes advertising does not belong inside AI conversations and why its chatbot, Claude, will stay ad-free.

In the blog post, Anthropic said advertising works well in places like search engines and social media, where users expect a mix of organic and sponsored content. However, it argued that conversations with AI assistants are different.
