MeitY seeks action report from X on sexually-explicit content on Grok, xAI

NEW DELHI: In a strongly-worded notice, the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) on Friday sought an action taken report (ATR) from Elon Musk-headed X, formerly Twitter, on the misuse of AI-backed Grok for sexually explicit content.

In a letter dated January 2, 2026, to X’s chief compliance officer of India operations, the ministry said that a “failure to observe statutory due diligence obligations” under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, and sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) towards immediate compliance for prevention of hosting, generation,
