China to restrict AI chats that landed ChatGPT-maker in court

China is reportedly planning to launch a regulatory framework that is specifically designed to restrict the emotional impact of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots on users. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has released draft rules that are aimed at stopping AI chatbots from influencing humans in ways that could lead to gambling addiction, self-harm or suicide.

According to a report by CNBC, Beijing is pivoting toward “emotional safety” targeting the “anthropomorphic” or human-like characteristics of AI that can lead to psychological manipulation while US giants like ChatGPT-maker OpenAI that have been sued by parents of teens for allegedly abetting suicide
