‘Alien tool without a manual’: OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy explains how AI is changing software programming

Former Tesla AI director and OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy has called AI systems an ‘alien tool’ that comes without a manual. The senior techie, who is often credited for Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems, also said that he hasn’t felt “this much behind as a programmer”.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Karpathy wrote, “The profession is being dramatically refactored as the bits contributed by the programmer are increasingly sparse and far between.
