Airtel rings in rights issue, shuffles senior leadership

Bharti Airtel’s board on Thursday approved calling the remaining ₹15,740 crore proceeds from a ₹21,000 crore rights issue as India’s second-largest telecom operator seeks to cut debt and fortify its balance sheet.

The board also approved a rejig of the top management with Shashwat Sharma taking over as the chief executive officer with effect from January 1. Gopal Vittal, the current CEO and MD, will transition to the role of executive vice chairman, overseeing the company and its subsidiaries.
