CEO of the world’s largest data centre company on how it handles 95% of internet traffic: We are like…
Adaire Fox-Martin, CEO of Equinix, which is the world’s largest global data centre network, uses a clear analogy to describe her company’s crucial role. She said Equinix is like the “airport authority of the internet” that handles 95% of internet traffic. Fox-Martin explained that the company manages the essential infrastructure, much like an airport handles runways and facilities. When a data package enters Equinix, “magic happens in the background” to direct it to its final destination, mirroring how passenger and luggage transfers occur between airlines. However, she noted that the main difference between them is that airlines typically compete with one another. In contrast, Equinix’s customers colocate to collaborate, which means major companies deliberately place their servers together to share information efficiently.
