Uber launches driverless robotaxis in Abu Dhabi with China’s WeRide
Uber Technologies and WeRide have begun Level 4 fully driverless robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi, making the emirate the first in the Middle East and the first city outside the US where Uber is offering fully autonomous rides. The rollout follows regulatory approval that allowed commercial driverless operations within the city.
Passengers can now be matched with a WeRide robotaxi through UberX, Uber Comfort or a new “Autonomous” option on the app. The services started on Yas Island and operate without a vehicle specialist inside the car. Highways, airport routes and trips connecting other islands will continue to use vehicles with safety operators for now.
