Apple has cut dozens of sales positions across its enterprise, education, and government teams in a rare workforce reduction that caught affected employees by surprise. The iPhone maker is restructuring how it sells to institutional customers, with some workers believing the move signals a strategic shift toward third-party resellers rather than direct sales.

The company confirmed the restructuring, telling Bloomberg it’s making changes to “connect with even more customers” while affecting only “a small number of roles.” Affected employees have until January 20 to find new positions internally or accept severance packages.
