Nvidia recently reminded investors about its potential $100 billion investment in OpenAI. In its latest quarterly financial report, the chipmaker highlighted the distinction between an announcement and a signed contract for its investors. In the risk factors section of the quarterly filing (seen by CNBC), Nvidia wrote: “There is no assurance that we will enter into definitive agreements with respect to the OpenAI opportunity or other potential investments, or that any investment will be completed on expected terms.” This statement follows an event two months ago in which Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a significant deal between the companies. At that time, Nvidia announced that it would invest $100 billion over several years, starting in 2026, as OpenAI’s AI supercomputing centres become operational. However, the exact cost of each data centre and the specific construction timeline were not shared at that time.
