Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy has reignited India’s work culture debate by advocating for a 72-hour workweek, this time citing China’s controversial ‘996’ schedule as justification. In an interview with Republic TV, the 79-year-old billionaire referenced the practice where employees work from 9 AM to 9 PM, six days a week—amounting to 72 hours weekly.
This isn’t Murthy’s first call for extended work hours. In 2023, he sparked nationwide controversy by advocating a 70-hour workweek for nation-building. Now, he’s citing China’s work culture to reinforce his stance. Murthy revealed that Catamaran, his family investment office, had dispatched senior and mid-level staff to various Chinese cities to study ground conditions.
