Google DeepMind CEO calls ‘Maths breakthrough’ claim of leading OpenAI researcher, ‘Embarrassing’
OpenAI’s claim that GPT-5 had solved ten of Paul Erdős’s famous “unsolved” math problems has drawn sharp backlash from across the AI industry, after experts revealed the model merely rediscovered existing solutions. The announcement, initially framed as a landmark breakthrough in automated reasoning, was swiftly condemned by Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis as “embarrassing,” while Meta’s Chief AI Scientist Yann LeCun accused OpenAI of succumbing to its own hype.
The controversy began when OpenAI VP Kevin Weil tweeted that GPT-5 had found solutions to ten unsolved Erdos problems and made progress on eleven others.
