Amazon Web Services outage: What brought the internet down across the world for more than 15 hours
Amazon Web Services experienced a massive 15-hour outage on October 20 that knocked offline thousands of popular applications and websites, from Snapchat and Fortnite to banking apps and government services, before the company announced full restoration of its cloud services.
The disruption began around 12:30 p.m. IST and affected more than 1,000 companies globally, with outage-tracking site Downdetector recording over 6.5 million user reports. Services including Venmo, Duolingo, Roblox, WhatsApp, and even Amazon’s own Alexa assistant were left unusable for hours before AWS declared all operations back to normal at approximately 3:30 a.m. IST on October 21.
