Former CEO John Sculley says this AI company is Apple’s ‘first real competitor’ in decades

John Sculley, Apple’s former CEO recently called ChatGPT-maker OpenAI as the company’s ‘first real competitor’ in decades. Speaking at the Zeta Live conference in New York City recently, Sculley said that Apple is facing tough competition from OpenAI in the era of AI. Sculley, who ran Apple from 1983 to 1993 stated “AI has not been a particular strength for them”.

During the interaction, he also hinted at current Apple CEO Tim Cook’s step down from the role. Sculley said that whoever replaces Cook will be required to help Apple transition from the apps era to the agentic era.
