Chip giant SK Group chairman Chey Tae-Won gets relief in South Korea’s most-expensive divorce case yet; what the court said

South Korea’s Supreme Court has overturned a historic 1.4 trillion won ($1 billion) divorce settlement awarded to Roh Soh-yeong, the estranged wife of SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, alleviating immediate financial pressure on the tycoon who controls SK Hynix, a global leader in memory chip manufacturing. The decision sends the case back to the Seoul High Court for reconsideration, marking a significant turn in one of South Korea’s most high-profile family disputes.

The case stems from a 2022 Seoul family court ruling that awarded Roh 66.5 billion won but rejected her claim to half of Chey’s 17.5% stake in SK Inc., the holding company of the SK Group conglomerate.
