The change comes under a new “treat adults like adults” policy and marks a shift from previous restrictions, which focused on mental health safeguards but limited the chatbot’s usability and experience for many users. With improved safety tools and mitigation strategies, OpenAI plans to relax restrictions for adults while continuing to block harmful, illegal, or exploitative content. Verified adults will also have more control over ChatGPT’s tone, style, and personality, creating what the company claims will be a more personalised and engaging experience.
