OpenAI denies betraying its mission, urges court to dismiss Elon Musk’s lawsuit

OpenAI has formally requested a California court to dismiss a trade-secret lawsuit filed by Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, arguing that the claims are legally baseless and factually flawed. The legal clash marks a dramatic escalation in the rivalry between two of the most prominent players in the artificial intelligence space. In its filing, OpenAI denied allegations that it misused proprietary information from Musk or xAI, asserting that the lawsuit fails to identify any specific trade secrets or how they were allegedly exploited. The company described the complaint as speculative and lacking legal merit.

The lawsuit, filed earlier this year, accuses OpenAI of straying from its original nonprofit mission and improperly commercializing its technology—claims that Musk has publicly echoed in recent months.
