Search Settings fined in Australia

In a landmark development for digital competition regulation, Google has admitted to engaging in anti-competitive conduct involving its search engine operations in Australia, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The company has agreed to pay a $55 million penalty, while other remedies remain under review.

The ACCC announced the admission in a statement filed before the Federal Court, where proceedings against Google are ongoing. The watchdog had alleged that Google misused its dominance in online search to limit competition, restrict consumer choice and entrench its market power.
