Cyber criminals getting more personal this festive season

Divya*, a Mumbai content writer, was finishing work before her Navratri break when she got a WhatsApp text from an unknown number with her roommate’s display picture. “She asked me to pay ₹6,000 for a food processor for her mother in Surat, saying her UPI wasn’t working. She was looking for processors two days before, so I paid.”

Later, at home, she learnt the truth. “I realised I was scammed.” Divya’s case highlights a surge in cyber fraud in India, where AI is fuelling more personal, targeted attacks, especially during the festive season when travel and shopping surges.
