OpenAI can use Nvidia’s $100 billion investment to buy Nvidia chips back
OpenAI will receive up to $100 billion from Nvidia in a strategic partnership that allows the ChatGPT maker to purchase chips directly from its new investor, creating a circular flow of funds between two AI industry giants. The deal enables OpenAI to deploy 10 gigawatts of AI computing systems while ensuring Nvidia maintains both a financial stake and guaranteed customer for its hardware.
The deal involves two separate but intertwined transactions, according to Reuters sources close to OpenAI. Nvidia will first invest in OpenAI for non-voting shares once the agreement is finalised, then OpenAI can use that cash to purchase Nvidia’s chips and systems.
