A former WhatsApp employee, Attaullah Baig, has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that his repeated cybersecurity warnings were ignored by the company. Baig, who claims he was the head of security, said he faced retaliation after he discovered “systemic cybersecurity failures that posed serious risks to user data” of the Meta-owned messaging platform in 2021. The lawsuit claims that about 1,500 WhatsApp engineers had unrestricted access to user data, with the ability to move or steal it without detection. When asked for comment, a WhatsApp spokesperson said that the latest lawsuit follows a common pattern where a former employee, dismissed for poor performance and insubordination attempted to fabricate claims in hopes of financial gain.
