OpenAI has quietly begun scanning ChatGPT conversations for threatening content and reporting users to law enforcement when human reviewers determine there’s an imminent risk of violence against others. The AI company disclosed this policy change in a blog post following tragic cases of users experiencing mental health crises while using the chatbot.

The monitoring system routes flagged conversations to a specialized team trained on OpenAI’s usage policies, who can ban accounts or contact police if they detect serious threats.
