MIT study finds 95% of generative AI projects are failing: Only hype, little transformation
A new MIT study has cast doubt on the AI gold rush, revealing that 95% of generative AI business projects are failing to deliver meaningful results. Despite more than $44 billion being invested in AI startups and enterprise tools in just the first half of 2025, the report, titled “The GenAI Divide: State of AI in Business 2025,” shows that only a tiny fraction of deployments have delivered significant revenue acceleration or measurable productivity gains. While companies rushed to adopt AI amid unprecedented hype, most projects collapsed under the weight of unrealistic expectations, poor integration, and a lack of specialized adaptation. The findings raise concerns that the AI industry could be fueling a bubble reminiscent of the dot-com crash.
