Amazon’s AGI lab head David Luan has a tip for junior engineers on how they can compete with top AI talents

Amazon’s artificial general intelligence lab chief David Luan believes fewer than 1,000 people worldwide qualify as top-tier AI talent, but he sees a clear path for junior engineers to break into the elite ranks within just three to four years.

Speaking on The Verge’s Decoder podcast, Luan outlined a strategic approach for newcomers: specialize in unique AI subdomains where “nobody has the answer” and become the world’s expert in that particular area. The former OpenAI research leader, who helped develop GPT-2 and GPT-3, emphasized that junior workers can “make a massive difference” by asking the right questions and finding unsolved problems.
