One Gemini AI query consumes about five drops of water: Google on how it calculates energy consumption
Amid growing concerns over the immense energy demands of artificial intelligence (AI), Google has announced that it has reduced the environmental footprint of its AI models, claiming a more than 30-fold decrease in the energy consumed by its Gemini AI over the last year. The company also released a comprehensive new methodology for measuring the energy, water and carbon emissions of its AI systems.
According to a report released by the company, the median energy consumption per text prompt in its Gemini Apps decreased by a factor of 33x over a 12-month period. The associated carbon footprint saw an even more significant drop, decreasing by 44x, the company claimed.
