Microsoft employees are reportedly questioning CEO Satya Nadella’s motive behind an internal memo attempting to explain why the tech giant has eliminated thousands of jobs while generating massive profits and investing $80 billion in AI infrastructure. According to a report in Business Insider, employee reactions reportedly range from suspicion about impending job cuts to criticism of what is being termed as the company’s tone-deaf messaging.

“As we begin a new fiscal year, I’ve been reflecting on the road we’ve traveled together and the path ahead,” Nadella wrote in Thursday’s memo. “Before anything else, I want to speak to what’s been weighing heavily on me, and what I know many of you are thinking about: the recent job eliminations.”
