Moving away from Pin codes to DIGIPINs

The government has introduced a pioneering initiative to transform how address information is structured, managed, and utilized across the country. Recognizing the pivotal role addresses play in the delivery of both public and private services, the Department of Posts under the ministry of communications has proposed the development of a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) called DHRUVA – Digital Hub for Reference & Unique Virtual Address. This initiative is designed to create a unified, secure, and standardized digital addressing system that supports seamless integration across sectors while enhancing user control, precision, and efficiency in service delivery.
India’s existing addressing system is deeply fragmented and inconsistent, marked by informal descriptions, localized knowledge and administrative dependencies that hinder last-mile service delivery, emergency response and effective governance. Current formats rely heavily on administrative identifiers, such as districts and pin codes, which can vary greatly in coverage – sometimes spanning hundreds of square kilometers.
