CCPA Advisory

On June 5, 2025, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), released a significant advisory under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. This advisory calls upon all e-commerce platforms to conduct thorough self-audits for the detection and elimination of ‘Dark Patterns’ on their digital interfaces. The move aims to foster a fair, ethical and consumer-centric digital ecosystem.
In accordance with Section 18(1) of the Act, the CCPA is empowered to ensure that no individual or entity engages in unfair trade practices. As part of its regulatory functions, the authority had earlier notified the ‘Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023’, which specifically classify and describe thirteen types of dark patterns. These dark patterns typically include deceptive interface designs or digital manipulations that mislead consumers into making unintended or unfavourable
