Google faces lawsuit for renaming Gulf of Mexico on Maps
Google is facing a lawsuit from Mexico over its decision to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico. Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s President, confirmed the action, saying that “the lawsuit has already been filed,” after the Alphabet-owned company changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for users of its Google Maps service in the US. This legal action comes after US lawmakers passed legislation seeking to turn President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the water body into federal law. The proposed bill would mandate the name change for US federal agencies as well. Earlier, in February, Sheinbaum had cautioned Google that the country may pursue legal action against the company if it did not reverse its decision.
