WhatsApp must do more to tackle illegal content on the platform in EU, here’s why

WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta Platforms, has surpassed the user threshold set by the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA), requiring the company to take on greater responsibility for combating illegal and harmful online content.In a February 14 filing, WhatsApp reported having approximately 46.8 million average monthly active users in the EU during the latter half of 2024. This exceeds the DSA’s 45-million-user threshold that designates a platform as a “Very Large Online Platform” (VLOP), as per news agency Reuters.
