Amazon to shut down Android app store, discontinue Coins

Amazon will shut down its Android app store on August 20. The company has notified developers that they will no longer be able to submit new apps to the store.

“Starting 20th August 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device,” said a notification on the company’s support page.

“We will also be discontinuing the Amazon Coins programme on 20th August 2025. As of 20th February 2025, Amazon Coins are no longer available for purchase,” it added.

Coins, Amazon’s digital currency, could be used to purchase games and apps on the app store.

The company also confirmed that any remaining coins in a customer’s account after the shutdown will be refunded. Amazon Appstore will continue to be available on Amazon devices, including Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices.

A report on technology news site Techcrunch, noted that few customers used the app store on non-Amazon devices.

Explaining the decision, an Amazon spokesperson said, “We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it.”
